Elementary Special Education

The special education department at Overton is divided into two main groups: speech language and resource. Our speech language services are provided by a speech pathologist contracted through ESU 10 in Kearney. The resource department is currently divided into two levels: birth through 6th grade and 7th grade through age 21, with two certified special education teachers. The Overton special education department has been a member of the Nebraska School Districts Student Record System (SRS) since 2002. All student reports are on this web-based program housed in Lincoln. This program not only allows parents to access their child’s special education information on a secure web site but also lets schools transfer these files to a new district within the state on the SRS. As time goes on, more of the information required by the state will be relayed through this system. Students from birth to age twenty-one are eligible for services if they are verified with a disability under IDEA 97, 92 NAC 51 or Rule 51. All verifications are made at the local level by a multidisciplinary team which is determined by the student’s disability along with state and federal government guidelines.
