In sixth grade, we use the Glencoe Literature and Writer's Choice textbooks. Most of our reading material and activities come from the Literature book, while our grammar and some writing activities come from the Writer's Choice book. Spelling consists of a word wall containing 125 commonly misspelled words. Our class usually reads two novels during the school year, as well. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is always a class favorite, as we learn about the Holocaust. The movie, The Devil's Arithmetic, complements the book well, along with some fun projects that go along with the story.
Sixth graders are required to earn 15 Accelerated Reader points each semester. Because this goal is easily attainable for some students, they are encourage to set their own personal goals, along with reaching the 30, 50, and 75 point clubs.
