Sixth grade students used nursery rhymes and rap music to learn about poetry. Groups chose a nursery rhyme and performed it to instrumental rap music for the class. Using the beats and rhythm of the music helped students find the rhythm and the stressed and unstressed syllables in the rhymes. The next step will be applying the music to poetry that they aren't so familiar with and highlighting the beats they hear as they read the poems aloud to the music.
